Fatal Accident at Brearley, Mytholmroyd, Halifax Courier 22nd November 2005
A DRIVER was killed at the wheel of his Ford Cortina and another man injured in a horror smash.
Luke Ives died instantly when his car was in collision with a white Mercedes van on Burnley Road at Brearley Bends between Mytholmroyd and Luddenden Foot just after 2pm yesterday.
It is believed the 28-year-old lived in Luddenden Foot. The driver of the van was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital with minor neck injuries and has been allowed home.
Traffic came to a standstill as police shut the busy A646 Burnley Road.
Sergeant Garry Alderson, head of Calderdale Road Traffic Police, believed both vehicles had been travelling in opposite directions when they collided. "We still don't know exactly how the accident came about," he said. Fire crews from Halifax, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge were called to make the scene safe and help with the casualties.
Two ambulances, a doctor and an operational supervisor attended the scene. The air ambulance was called but did not land.
The road was cordoned off between Luddenden Lane and New Road until after 6pm while accident investigators examined the scene. Huge queues developed.
A spokesman for Calder High School, Mytholmroyd, said many parents had told their children to walk home. Schoolchildren were seen making their way through fields to avoid the road.
